Surveys have shown that a major concern of contemporary society is that we will eventually run out of water. It is the one commodity that will inevitably be in short supply as our population continues to grow. Water is not unlimited! Please consider your part in saving water: Spencer will help aid you to do your part in these worrying times of water scarcity. He can do this through improving your soil and planting suitable dry-tolerant and/or indigenous plants.

Basically, a sustainable garden works in harmony with nature, combining materials with a low environmental cost, within the life cycle. It showcases healthy plants and soil that don't rely on pesticides or artificial fertilizers. This is why when you use Spencer Wilson Gardens you are using locally grown and locally couriered plants, which are treated with ORGANIC sprays and manure.

A sustainable design minimises environmental impact on water usage, energy, materials and food. It takes into consideration the local and site conditions and encourages biodiversity. As for self-sustaining gardens, be aware that they can help moderate your surrounding environment – including your house and other nearby buildings. In drawing up plans for self-sustaining gardens, Spencer looks at new design approaches such as ecological design.

We're officially green!

The environmental certification, known as ECLIPs (Environmentally Certified Landscape Industry Professionals), was established by non profit organisation Sustainable Gardening Australia (SGA), with development funding from the Victorian Government's Sustainability Fund.

To meet the standards of ECLIPs, landscape professionals must undergo training in sustainable design, construction and maintenance practices, and be subject to random independent audits of landscapes under construction and those they have completed. These landscape professionals must also ensure they keep up to date with the latest in sustainable practices by attending industry seminars and workshops. SGA also helps to keep professionals up to date with monthly technical bulletins.

SGA developed ECLIPs with the assistance of the Landscape Industries Association of Victoria (LIAV), the University of Melbourne, the Melbourne Zoo, the Royal Botanical Gardens, numerous councils, and a trial group of enthusiastic professionals.
